Fire-resistant ventilation device
The invention relates to the field of ventilation devices which are used for controlling the air supply in buildings such as houses, offices and the like. The ventilation devices are usually included for this purpose in the window or door openings of the building. They consist of a housing through which a ventilation passage extends which can be opened or closed by means of a control member, such as a valve, barrel or slider, in connection with controlling the air flow.
The housing and the control member, for example the valve of the ventilation device, usually consist of extruded profiles of plastic or aluminum. Such materials have been selected on the basis of the requirements imposed on the ventilation device, such as durability, stiffness, resistance to weather influences, insulating effect and favorable costs. The known ventilation devices therefore also appear to function without interference for many years.
In exceptional situations, however, circumstances may arise in which the known ventilation devices are less well calculated. This mainly concerns events in which high temperatures occur, such as fire. In such cases, the plastic materials and the aluminum from which the ventilation device is constructed can collapse. As a result, the risk that a fire would spread through the affected ventilation device cannot be excluded.
The object of the invention is to minimize this risk of spreading a fire via the known ventilation devices. That object is achieved by, in combination, a ventilation device, comprising a housing with an outside and an inside between which a ventilation passage extends and a valve provided in the housing for closing off or releasing the ventilation passage, as well as an opening which extends over the inside. or fire-resistant device extending outside the housing, comprising an apertured fire-resistant element with a heat-expanding material and an apertured carrier attached to the housing, the apertures of the fire-resisting element and the apertures of the carrier are aligned with respect to the ventilation passage of the ventilation device. The carrier is preferably made of steel, but instead of steel any other material that is resistant to heat can be used.
According to the invention, therefore, a standard ventilation device can be used. This ventilation device per se has not been adapted in connection with increasing fire resistance. The latter is namely obtained by the separate fire-resistant device according to the invention, which is placed on the standard ventilation device. The advantage of such a combination is that the existing ventilation devices can continue to be used. They thus continue to comply with the applicable standards and legal requirements, while nevertheless the required fire resistance is insured.
The fire-resistant device can be designed in various ways such that heat and fire that attempt to propagate through the ventilation passage can be blocked. In order to also ensure that in the case of cohesion of the ventilation device is lost under the influence of fire, such as by melting or deforming the plastic or aluminum profiles, the fire-resistant device can also be arranged around the ventilation device. In that case the ventilation device itself is indeed lost, but the fire resistance is maintained by the fire-resistant device. In that connection, the carrier can comprise an apertured wall as well as flanges projecting relative to that wall, which are attached to the housing of the ventilation device. The flanges surround the housing of the ventilation device in such a way that the fire phenomena can be stopped.
This encapsulation can be further improved if the support comprises steel headboards which are each connected to the wall and the flanges, which headboards cover the ends of the ventilation device. The headboards of the ventilation device itself, in particular, are thus shielded by the headboards of the carrier, such that safety against spreading of the fire is also ensured at those locations.
The fire-resistant element can for example be block or plate-shaped and have series of openings. The fire-resistant element preferably comprises a material that undergoes heat-foaming. Such a material is known per se, for example from European patent application 1,322,895.
The flanges of the carrier can each bear securing lips on their edge remote from the wall which protrude with respect to the ventilation device. By means of these lips, the fire-resistant device can be firmly attached to the surrounding parts of the building. This ensures that the fire-resistant device can be reliably held in place, even if the cohesion of the ventilation device is lost.
To further finish the combination according to the invention, an inner grid can be provided on the steel support. In particular, the inner lattice may comprise a perforated wall as well as flanges protruding on either side of that wall. By means of these flanges, which extend over the flanges of the steel support, the inner lattice can be snapped into place.
The invention further relates to a fire-resistant device for use in the combination as described above. This fire-resistant device comprises an apertured fire-resistant element with a heat-foaming material and an apertured carrier, the apertures of the fire-resistant element and the apertures of the carrier being aligned with respect to each other.
The invention further relates to a wall construction comprising a wall with an opening and a combination covering the opening as described above. The outwardly projecting lips of the fire-resistant device are fixed to the wall.
In addition, the invention relates to a frame construction, comprising a frame with a rotatable panel accommodated therein, as well as an opening and a combination covering the opening as described above. In that case the lips are attached to the frame.
The invention will be explained in more detail below with reference to an exemplary embodiment shown in the figures.
Figure 1 shows the combination according to the invention in the disassembled state.
Figure 2 shows the combination in assembled state.
Figure 3 shows a cross section through the combination arranged in a frame.
The combination according to the invention shown in figures 1 and 2 consists of the standard ventilation device 1, as well as the parts of the fire-resistant device 2. As shown in the cross-section of figure 3, the ventilation device consists of the profiles 3,4 and 5. These define the housing 10, which has an outer side 6 and an inner side 7 between which the ventilation passage 8 extends. The air flow through the ventilation passage 8 can be controlled by the valve 9. The longitudinal ends of the housing 10 are determined by the head partitions 11.
The fire-resistant device 2 is arranged on this ventilation device 1, which is known per se, in the example shown on the inside 7 of the ventilation device, although it is also conceivable to arrange the fire-resistant device on the outside thereof. The fire-resistant device consists of the fire-resistant element 12, the steel support 13 and the end plates 14. The fire-resistant element 12 consists of a material that expands strongly when heated, and has a plate shape or block shape in which series of holes 15 are arranged. The air flow which has passed through the ventilation device 1 can flow freely through these holes 15.
The steel support 13 consists of the wall 16, which is mainly formed by the dams 17 between which relatively large openings 18 extend. Via these openings 18, the air which emerges from the holes 15 of the fire-resistant element 12 can flow further. The flanges 19 protrude from the longitudinal edges of the wall 16, which in turn are provided at their ends with outwardly pointing lips 20 directed away from each other.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the fire-resistant element 12 is received in the space formed between the wall 16 and the flanges 19 of the fire-resistant device 2. Subsequently, the flanges 19 of the fire-resistant element 12 are slid over the bottom and top of the fire housing 10 of the ventilation device 1. The fire-resistant element 12 thereby comes to lie against the inside 7 of the housing 10. The lips 20 of the steel support 13 come to lie flat against the frame 21 in which a window 26 is situated . The frame 21 has a hole 22 in which the housing 10 of the ventilation device is received. By means of a suitable fastening means (not shown), the steel support 13 is fastened to said frame 21. To the end faces of the steel support 13 the steel head partitions 14 are fastened which, as already mentioned above, cover the end faces 11 of the housing 10.
Finally, a so-called inner grid 23 is provided on the steel carrier 13, which is provided with a perforated wall 24. This inner grid 23 has flanges 25 which are hooked or clicked onto the flanges 19 of the steel carrier.
In the event of a fire, the ventilation device 1 is exposed to the heat and fire. It can even happen that the various profiles 3-5 that make up the housing 10 melt or warp. However, because the steel support 13 with a fire-resistant element 12 is firmly attached to the inside of the frame 21, the effects of fire and the like cannot enter the space ventilated by the ventilation device 1. Firstly, as soon as it becomes hot, the material of the fire-resistant element 12 will expand, as a result of which the series of openings 15 will be closed therein. Because the fire-resistant element 12 is properly held in place in the steel support 13 and the end plates 14, it will also be possible to maintain the fire resistance in the event of prolonged exposure to heat, fire and the like,
